6 Things You Need To Know About Pimples

Because nearly 17 million people in the United Status suffer from acne, it has become one of the most common skin diseases in the United States. Nearly 85 percent of people between the ages of 12 and 24 get acne at one time or another; it is most typically found in teenagers and young adults. Usually, acne goes away by the age of 30; however, some people in their 40's and 50's still suffer from acne.

The process by which a pimple develops is highly intricate. The exact cause of pimple formation is unknown; however, we do know that a pore collapses on itself and blocks sebum (oil) from escaping. Scientists are working on figuring out why this process takes place in one sebaceous gland and not in others.

Causes of adult acne and teen acne may include hormones, diet, evolutionary biology, vitamin deficiency, stress, and more. The real explanation may be a complex mix of many of these factors. Most pimples are found on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Acne is not a serious health threat but, it can cause scars both physically and emotionally.

Somtimes the sebum (oil), body hair and skin cells clump together into a plug; then, swelling occurs when bacteria gets into the plug. Once the plug starts to break down, pimples appear.

Because many factors cause pimples, time is better spent on finding and testing an effective treatment.

The most common types of pimples are:

1. Whiteheads. Pimples that stay under the skin's surface.

2. Blackheads. These pimples rise to the surface of the skin and they look black. Contrary to popular belief, the black color is not from dirt.

3. Papules. Small pink bumps on the surface of the skin that can be tender.

4. Pustules. These pimples are red at the bottom and have pus on top.

5. Nodules. Large, painful, solid pimples that are deep in the skin.

6. Cysts. Deep, painful, pus-filled pimples that also cause scarring.
