Every year when spring arrives, flowers burst with color and the home improvement center looks like a busy beehive. Americans get excited about working around the house and making home improvements. The check list of to-do and to-buy items is reviewed as homeowners walk up and down the isles at their favorite home improvement center. It isn't long before the shopping cart is full of plants, flowers, landscape lights, paint, lumber and great anticipation saying goodbye to winter. However, for many, little thought goes into the credit card used to pay for all the items at check out. Using the right credit card when making improvements, upgrades and additions which can increase your homes value, can also give other rewards. Remember, the home for most families is their biggest asset. Very often we only think of the improvements made to a home being inside. However, did you know that landscaping could add to the resale value of a property by as much as 14% percent? The money spent increases your home's value giving you a return when it's time to sell or refinance. By the way a landscaped patio can raise property value by 12.4%. There is a chance for a double pay off besides the increased property value. For example the Chase Home Improvement Rewards Credit Card allows the cardholder to earn extra points when making purchases for home improvement projects. For every dollar you spend in improvement of your home earns you 3 points. That works out to 3% cash back when you redeem the points. Cardholders earn 1 point for every dollar spent on other purchases. Get $25 in cash, gift certificate or gift card every time you redeem 2500 points. You can "spend" the cash, gift certificate or gift card at places like Home Depot, Amazon, Best Buy, Circuit City, Snap-on, Bed Bath & Beyond, Sears and Linens & Things. One of the big box retailers who's initials do not stand for "High Definition" also offer a credit card. However, after reviewing their offer they come up a point short over the Chase card. They give 2 points for every dollar spent and 1 point for every dollar spent at other places. It looks like the Chase card is a better deal. But you'll have to decide. Other cards allow homeowners the opportunity to pay down their mortgage quicker by earning rebates. The rebates on satellite TV, cable, telecommunications and utilities can then be applied to the mortgage balance. Using a home improvement credit card goes way beyond allowing you to do self check out. Now spending can earn you rewards, benefits, air miles and extras with the right card. If your card does not give you the extras for all your purchases it is time to use a card that pays you back as you improve your home and life.
