Let me share to you my story about a friend of mine who succeeded on her ‘office carpet cleaning services’ in Orange County (CA). My childhood friend, Nadia (not her real name) worked for a molly maid cleaning company during her collegiate days at an Ivy League university. To support her matriculation, she worked on residential carpet cleaning then eventually sourced out on offering services to her alma mater as a sideline job apart from the molly cleaning company she is currently involved back then. The pay is great as she stressed to me. It is not a very high-paying job like what corporations pay by the hour, but knowing where to market your services and who market it makes a lot bigger revenue. Her job with the molly maid company is not full time since she is still at school, so she gets work on a limited quota on an odd schedule, which she hates the most because she had adjusted too many important events for school. The bang for the buck came when her ‘calling’ walked-in in front of her. Nadia enthusiastically told me, “I overheard a school staff ranting that one his janitors went AWOL. He was infuriating that the carpets at the lounge and at the hall of Lorem Ipsum building are covered with dirt,” she sighed and continued her story, “I don’t know what happened, but I just quickly ran to the school staff member and gleefully proposed to him that I can do the job for him at a price and blah, blah, blah, and that he should hire me because I can do the job and never leave it unkempt blah, blah, blah…” Weeks later, she found herself doing carpet cleaning for the university’s lounges, halls and faculty rooms. Time flew and she graduated and earned her degree. Circa 2005, she was working as a publicist for an advertising and public relations firm at the downtown LA and her management decided to have their workplace floored with carpets. A brilliant mind that she is, she formed her own OC carpet cleaning services while employed at the firm. There was no conflict of interest on her newly ventured company with the firm so she pushed through her not-so-new endeavor since she have done it in the past. Her first client was the advertising and public relations firm she works for. The service feedback was highly praised and still today, her company is still serving the firm. And since she is a publicist, making public relations and promotions are her expertise. She networked first with her host company, then later through word-of-mouth, then moved on to grapevine advertising. She says that her business, which targets office building cleaning during the early year, is growing stronger from loyal clients and referred clients. Today, she plans to initially target residential carpet cleaning services and if the project is getting productive results, she will market her services through print advertising. I asked her why she first served commercial clientele; she expresses, “Doing business with commercial entities is not seasonal. Every week you get commissioned to clean the carpets, then the next week the carpets and the rags, and there are most instances that we get to clean the entire office on weekend, so by Mondays, the office is spic and span… I studied more about cleaning services and everything I need to know like which heavy-duty equipments to use, I sourced out on cleaning supplies, I hired the best people and send them to training, I keep abreast on cleaning service trends, my pricing strategy, my company’s image, I have different kinds of insurances laid on in case emergencies happen. And through the years and the months that passed I am blessed that my roster of clients stayed with me up to today. I guess the trick-of-the-trade, of which I am sure every cleaning companies know but lack in practice is customer relations management. You may have the best service, or you may be the top-of-the-mind cleaning service company, but your labor does not equal it, then the whole point of doing the business is worthless.” Nadia is still working for the advertising and public relations firm and regards her business as an additional source of income.
