A Tango Show in London

Whenever the name of tango dancing is mentioned, you would immediately think of a dance form which is quite sensual, romantic as well as sexy.
This type of dancing originated in Argentina. Argentina is even now famous for tango dancing and tango shows organized in the country's capital Buenos Aires. This dance form then spread to Europe in early twentieth century. Popularity of this dance form started to increase in the United States when the famous film actor Rudolph Valentino danced a tango dance in film in 1921.
There are mainly four styles of tango dancing prevalent now: Argentine, French, Gaucho and International. There is an Americanized version which is a combination of the best features all these four styles.
Music plays a very important part in tango dancing as well as tango shows. Tango music is generally based on 16 or 32 beats. Playing of the music would be more like book. The music consists of paragraphs which are also known as major phases and sentences which are better known as minor phases.
In London, one such show was performed in Peacock Theatre from 18th to 29th September, 2007 by an Argentine dance company Estampas Porteñas which they have named as Tango Fire. It is always very exciting when you are able to see a tango show in your own city.
The tango show consisted of various forms of the dance form starting from its dance hall origin. The dancing also incorporated current dance routines in its presentation. The show was full of intricate dance patterns, costume changes and lots of songs. While the show tried to provide a spectacular effect, but it seemed that something was missing in the presentation. Somehow, the choreography was not able to produce the true spirit of tango dancing.
Technically, performance of each dancer was superb. Every dancer was showing superb skill in the dancing. The show appeared quite dazzling especially towards the end of the show.
But, duet numbers lacked the intensity the dancers showed in group dances. The expressions of the dancers were more visual and lacked proper display of emotions. Sometimes, the pace of the dancing became too fast and became a little frantic making the musical interlude provided between dances to be quite pleasing. In fact, the music provided by the accompanying band was an attraction of the show. They provided some kind of human warmth to the show, which the dancing was somehow lacking.
The show showcased the present day tango choreography but, somehow, it could not touch the emotions of the viewer enough.
