Our busy lives demand time-saving tricks whenever we can find them. But some things, like homemade waffles, are worth the extra time and effort. Waffles have been the main attractions on breakfast tables and buffet bars for many years. They are served for breakfast with butter and syrup, and for dessert with fresh fruit and ice cream. Some people eat waffles covered with beef gravy for dinner. There's really no end to the many ways you can enjoy this tasty treat. For many years, people around the world have relied on the waffle as a dietary staple. Past generations created waffles by baking barley batter in a crude iron griddle to make a toasted cake. Things quickly progressed from there. Curious cooks began to experiment with ingredients and baking methods. It was popular, at one time, to bake the family crest into the waffles. Every generation has enjoyed easier waffle-making as technology has improved, recipes were perfected and new gadgets created. With a good recipe for batter and a proper waffle iron, you can easily make delicious home made waffles. Every waffle iron consists of a basic design. Two metal plates are hinged at a centre point. These metal plates are heated, and the batter is poured onto the bottom plate. Then, the top plate is folded over to create an "oven" to bake the batter. In years past, waffle irons were heated over flames. The batter-filled iron was held over an open fire with attached tongs as the waffles baked. Thankfully, today's cooks have electric waffle irons that are simpler to use, easier to clean and handy to store. You may be surprised by the selection of waffle irons that are available. They vary in size and in the type of design they create on the waffles. In addition to traditional square design, waffles can also be indented with circles and triangles. Some waffle irons bake a heart-shaped design, while others will leave an indentation of a message or cartoon character. Better waffle irons have exchangeable plates that allow you to change the design for special occasions. One of the most popular waffles today is the Belgian Waffle. Waffle lovers discovered these delicious treats around 1965. Since then, people have devoured them at mealtime, snack time and at carnivals. Belgian waffles are baked using special irons that have deeper indentations on the plates. The result is wonderful, deep crevices that hold fresh fruit, maple syrup, whipped cream, and even chocolate chips. It's so fast and easy to make homemade waffles. A good recipe and proper waffle iron are all you need. Once you smell the aroma and taste the incredible flavor, you'll never go back to plain old freezer waffles again!
