Cell Phone Etiquettes on Dating

The mobile phone has planted itself effortlessly in the mainstream of the modern individual’s life. As sociologists pointed out, the cell phone is an extension of the person who owns it. Therefore, how the cell phone is used is a reflection of its user. But that’s the social scientists talking. But there might be a grain of truth as to what these social experts have been implying. I know someone who is die-hard Hello Kitty fanatic since childhood. Everything she wears has got to have the Hello Kitty on it. When the mobile phone hit the streets, she got herself a pink phone with these Hello Kitty cell phone accessories, ranging from cell phone cases, cell phone covers. When she became a Sprint subscriber, she lamented the move because Sprint accessories don’t sell any Hello Kitty enhancements.
Another fine example is a good male friend of mine who is into Bob Marley and anything that has got to do with Bob Marley. He has this whole closet of t-shirts that either have Bob Marley’s face on it or the visually aesthetic cannabis leaf design up front. His cell phone also shouts his devotion to the dead reggae icon with his array of ring tones are all composed of Bob Marley songs. Perhaps it’s the assertion of individuality that is happening here. I don’t know. But whatever the case, the social scientists might have hit the bull’s eye with the extension of self thing. I do bite to that viewpoint, to say the least.
As mentioned earlier, the mobile phone is now a part of the modern individual’s life. Unwanted or not, there are these sets of unwritten rules on how you are to act with your cell phone in a way social scientists in particular, and the society in general, would approve. I am not saying you, dear reader, should adhere fervently and feverishly to these set of cell phone etiquettes but it pays to know some of them. As they say, ignorance of the law excuses no one. But we’re not breaking laws here, mind you. It’s just me making an emphasis. The following are some tips of how a guy should act with his cell phone when out on a date. Read on and consider yourself enlightened.

1. If you really need to make or answer a call when on a date, politely excuse yourself from the table and go to where she can’t hear your conversation but maintain visual contact. Maximum of three minutes is the general rule, that is, if you want a second shot.
2. Inform your date in advance that you are expecting an important call. Whether you mean it or use it as an excuse to bail yourself out if the situation isn’t going your way, is totally up to you.
3. If you prefer to check the movies, please set your phone to silent mode. It is pretty much self-explanatory. If the need arises, refer to 1 and 2.
4. Never use your cell phone when you are talking to your date or the other way around. It is rude. As a sign of pure interest on her, keep your cell phone out of sight. Otherwise, place it on the table if you want to turn her off.

Other dating experts would tell you to leave your cell phones at home when out on a date. That’s a big boo-boo. Cell phones are intended to be a tool for constant communication. Bring it along if you like. But do bear in my mind that you do have a date. Stay focused on her. That’s the whole point of you asking her out on a date, right?
