Changing the World, One Country at a Time

Jeffrey Smith is the author of the best-selling book Seeds of Deception which is about the dangers of genetically modified foods, and he's also the author of the recently released Genetic Roulette. Jeffrey Smith never intended to be a leader in the health and food industries, but when he learned about the dangers of genetically modified foods, his passion became to change the world.

In his effort to change the way the world views genetically modified (GM) foods, Jeffrey Smith ran for congress, worked at a Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) detection laboratory as Vice-President of Marketing, and traveled the world speaking to political leaders about his book, Seeds of Deception. After all that work, Jeffery Smith still felt his message wasn't reaching its target audience. His book read too much like a novel, and political leaders didn't have time for that.

Jeffrey Smith was determined to get his message out somehow. The novel approach wasn't working, so he decided to write a book that addressed the facts on one page with references on the opposite page. Political leaders want facts. Scientists want references. To gather materials for this book, Genetic Roulette, Jeffrey Smith spent a two year period meeting with over 30 scientists. He used this book to document 65 of the known health risks associated with GM foods. So what exactly are GM foods anyway?

When someone takes the DNA from one species and inserts it into another species to get an unnatural result, they are genetically modifying it. For example, scientists have tried to put the DNA of spiders into goats with the hope that they can milk the goat for spider proteins and use that milk to create bullet proof vests. In foods, the DNA of certain bacteria and viruses can be put into crops so that they won't die when sprayed with herbicide, and they can even be used to produce pesticides.

What happens when you eat foods like chips or bread that are made from modified corn and wheat crops? Your digestive tract can become the breeding ground for pesticides. The goal of GM food research is to create more food to save the world from a hunger crisis, but our primitive knowledge of the subject makes eating these crops a game of roulette.

GM food companies seem to be more concerned about profits than about the long-term health and well being of populations eating their products. Jeffrey Smith spends as much time as possible trying to get that point across to world leaders. Getting a product to market quickly generates profits, but at the same time, it reduces the amount of time spent in health research.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was created to protect us from unsafe foods, so why aren't FDA leaders doing anything to stop unsafe foods from making it to market? The 1992 FDA policy claims that the agency is "Not aware of any information showing that the foods created from these methods differ in any meaningful or uniform way." That means that the FDA is taking a hands-off approach. They're not going to require any special testing because they believe GM products are the same as natural ones.

Many scientists, including those who have worked for the FDA in the past, all agree that GM foods cause allergies, toxins, new diseases, and nutritional problems. Some scientists have tried to warn superiors, but they have been ignored.
