Flatulence is a natural body function that involves relaxing of the anal sphincter to release gases that have built up in the digestive tract. Flatulence is common in mammals and as a body function flatulence is only a matter of cosmetic concern if the frequency of passing gas is high. Today there are various remedies and drugs available that can control the volume and frequency of flatulence. However there is no cure as such for flatulence, as flatulence is a natural body process like breathing. The first thing to understand about flatulence is that flatulence is perfectly harmless and the most a flatus can do is cause some embarrassment. The first things a person can do to reduce flatulence is diet control. Foods that are rich in polysaccharides and carbohydrates are usually associated with causing flatulence. A person looking to reduce flatulence is usually advised diet control and is advised to stay away from foods like potatoes, sweet potatoes, pulses and lentils. In addition using Probiotics like lacto bacillus has also shown promising results. The principle behind probiotics is that bacteria like lacto bacillus favourably alter the flora of the digestive tract and thus reduce the production of gases, and ultimately help reduce flatulence. Natural substance like yogurt and kefir contain large amounts of lactobacillus and help in controlling flatulence. In addition using medical activated charcoal tablets is also a known way to reduce flatulence, and in particular the odour associated with flatulence. Pharmacological techniques involve using digestive enzymes to improve digestion. Digestive enzymes aid the digestion process and hence reduce the amount of undigested food in the digestive tract. Once the amount of undigested food in the digestive tract is lower, the chances of gaseous build up are lower and hence flatulence is controlled. In addition ingestion of alpha-galactosidase enzymes also helps reduce flatulence. Alpha-galactosidase enzymes help the body break down complex sugars and hence improve the digestive process, thereby working to reduce the build up of gases in the digestive tract. Surfactants are also used in flatulence control. Surfactants reduce the surface tension of faecal matter and thus allow absorption of gases by faecal matter and water. Although surfactants do not reduce the production of gases, they simply allow better absorption of the gases and help reduce the undesirable effects of flatulence. Home remedies to reduce flatulence include consumption of acidic substance like vinegar, and also consumption of natural probiotics like yogurt. In addition using spices like cumin, coriander is also believed to reduce flatulence however there is no scientific study that can conclusively associate reduction in flatulence by consuming spicy food. In conclusion, flatulence control is a blend of a dietary regimen and using pharmaceutical option like enzymes and dietary supplements. People looking for immediate relief from excessive flatulence should understand that flatulence control takes time and since flatulence is a natural body process, there is no cure for
