It is difficult to imagine a world without recycling. A world without discussion of electric cars. A world where environmental alternatives are not actively sought to reduce our impact on the world. It has become a genuine consideration for many Americans. How can we reduce the impact that we make on the environment and how can we do a better job of educating future generations to the dangers of irresponsible waste? It seems that in almost every part of our lives, "green" alternatives to traditional solutions are now preferred and actively promoted by society. However, there are areas of our lives where such advances are still sadly missing (or at least not actively sought). Pest Control is one of them and its impact may surprise a good many readers here. For decades, the large chemical companies have provided highly-toxic and harmful products to be used in the eradication of termites. The products are used to "gas" an entire home to destroy termites. Unfortunately, the chemicals used are also highly toxic and lead to many other complications. Namely, you cannot be around when a treatment is done. This means you have to vacate your home for several days. Secondly, you will have to remove all food and medications before you vacate. The reason for removing these items is that the chemicals will actually be absorbed by your food and medications. Finally, you need to take out any plants that are close to the structure, as the gas will kill all vegetation upon contact. So, that is a thumbnail sketch of Fumigation. That is what people have done for decades. Here are some facts that you may find a little concerning: The gas used carries the highest EPA warning label for pesticides. It is highly toxic and has even been known to cause death in humans (recent cases in California have been covered by various news outlets). The gas does not just get absorbed by food and medication. It is actually absorbed by many other materials. For example, plastic kitchen implements...... the ones you use to cook your food, will absorb the gas. The "off-gassing" process (reverse of absorption, basically the leaking of the chemical back into the air) will happen for days, if not weeks following a fumigation treatment. Considering how the fumigation is achieved (burly guys dragging heavy tarps all over your roof to cover it like a circus tent), it is no great surprise that significant damage can and does occur to roofs from this method (my wife and I recently moved into our new home and there were more than 200 broken Mexican tiles on our roof....I wonder how that happened). Enough of the downsides of this dangerous process, though. Let's look on the positive side. The fumigation treatment will get the termites and in most cases you receive a 1 or 2-year warranty from the pest control company, which essentially means if termites return within this time frame, you can call them out to re-treat. The goal you had of removing termites is reached. And you have a guarantee that you will be covered for a while. Orange Oil is quickly gaining ground on this traditional treatment method. This treatment method involves using Orange Oil to treat termites, instead of highly-toxic manufactured chemicals. Orange Oil's main ingredient is D-limonene, which is found in the rind of an orange. It is obviously a renewable resource (we are all drinking orange juice, so their are plenty of peels to go around!) It turns out that Orange Oil is fatal to termites. Buildings treated with Orange Oil show its extraordinary power to eradicate termites. So, assuming that you can kill termites with either fumigation or Orange Oil, let's investigate the experience of an Orange Oil treatment. Firstly, you do not have to move out of your home. Secondly, you do not have to remove anything from your home. Finally, you do not have to worry about any plants around your property. Hmmm, sounds too good to be true... "What about my warranty" you may be thinking. Surely, using a big chemical company product is going to get me a better guarantee and a more conclusive warranty. Well, that would make sense, wouldn't it? Otherwise, why use a highly toxic manufactured chemical instead of a naturally-occurring and renewable resource like Orange Oil? Most Orange Oil providers will warrant your home for as long as any fumigation company. Our company, Planet Orange Termite Services, will actually provide a 2-year "whole structure" warranty on any building we treat...period. Finally, the long held belief that Fumigation can reach all areas, but Orange Oil treatment cannot is false. With the advent of fiber-optic technology now in use, there are no "inaccessible areas" that cannot be viewed and treated, if necessary. This is the reason that Orange Oil treatments with XT-2000 (an approved orange oil product to treat termites) is considered a "primary treatment method." This classification just means that the treatment method is all-encompassing and the company doing the treatment can warrant the entire structure, as opposed to spot treatments. The "primary" designation is also given to the fumigation process. So, they are considered the same in terms of their ability to treat termites and guarantee the entire structure. Let's summarize....eliminate termites, don't move out or remove belongings, reduce harmful emissions and potential health side effects, identical warranty that guarantees your home for 2 years. Tough to believe that anybody fumigates their house anymore, isn't it?
