Facial tics are repetitive, brief, sporadic twitches of the facial muscles. They can be very diverse, but the most common ones are eye blinking, facial grimacing, mouth twitches, nose wrinkling, squinting as well as throat clearing and grunting. Those tics are often symptomatic of nervous conditions such as Tourette syndrome. They commonly occur during childhood and often fade away within some weeks, even though some may last indefinitely. The causes of facial tics are still not very well understood, but some things are suspected of triggering or worsening the symptoms. Tics can be caused by some nutritional deficiencies such as a magnesium insufficiency, but they are also very often symptoms of other disorders such as Tourette syndrome, whose causes are most likely neurological, and, to a certain degree, genetically inherited. Anxiety and stress have also been proven to provoke and notably aggravate the tics' frequency. Facial tics are hard to deal with everyday especially for a child. Schoolmates, teachers and even sometimes parents, may not be able to understand how hard it is to try to hold back tics, especially for a long time period such as for example a class. People will most often tell the child to "quit it", or may even mock him or her because of the tics. From facial grimaces to eye blinking, tics usually feel inappropriate and embarrassing for both children and adults. It is also fatiguing to have to try to control them constantly. This obsession can make you overly self-critical and you can in turn start to lose self-confidence or to develop some type of social anxiety. It is although possible to eliminate this uneasiness and to avoid people's awkward stares. There are ways to significantly diminish, and even sometimes definitely cure, facial twitches, in order to find your peace of mind and enjoy a fully normal life. You would never have to worry again about facial grimaces or holding back any of those irritating twitches. Facial tics are rarely treated or, in some severe cases or when the tics are related to Tourette syndrome, patients may be given antipsychotics which are also prescribed to treat disorders such as attention deficit disorder, schizophrenia or obsessive-compulsive behaviors. These drugs were not designed to cure facial tics in particular and might not be efficient all the time. Moreover, they are known to have numerous adverse effects both on the short and long term. Insomnia, depression, weight gain, sexual dysfunction and anxiety are only some of the many adverse effects which are associated with these drugs. Some of them can even aggravate tics over time! But there are however other ways of dealing with facial tics which are entirely natural and free of adverse effects. Methods which work with (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and hypnosis have been designed especially in order to treat facial tics. They will help you reduce them over time. In order to understand how these methods work it is important to know that tics are not an entirely physiological condition and are not completely involuntary either. They are an answer to an unconscious impulse to do the movement of the tic. This desire unpleasantly builds up as you try to avoid performing the movement. These urges also grow in frequency and intensity alike when the patient feels stress or anxiety or when he is placed in certain situations. Facial tics are a way to diminish pressure when you are anxious or are coping with a stressful environment. This unconscious association could be cured with NLP and hypnosis since they make it possible to alter the type of behavior your unconscious provokes when facing certain situations. If acute, the therapist will suppress the facial tic by suggesting the unconscious have you twitch your toe instead. When the toe twitches it is not visible or apparent to other people. Hypnosis also allows you to become much more relaxed in general, so it is a soothing experience. It will help you eliminate both the stress and anxiety which aggravate facial tics. Facial tics come in many different types: eye blinking, nose wrinkling, mouth twitches, squinting, grunting, facial grimacing or throat clearing. If tics have physical causes, there are also as we have seen, very strong psychological factors. Anxiety and stress are certainly the most considerable of those factors. Tics have their roots in the unconscious mind as an answer to states of stress or anxiety; with self-hypnosis and NLP you are able to change this association. Anxiety and stress can also be effectively fought on the long term with the stress relieving and relaxing techniques of hypnotherapy, which will greatly reduce the occurrence of facial tics.
