Well, the answer to the question Are there free (legal) music downloading sites available is not exactly black or white. Actually, the whole business of free music downloads seems to fall into the gray area. One thing is for certain; you can find every type of music on the internet. Some of the categories available include: Hip Hop, Jazz, Rock and Roll, Blues, Country, Southern Rock, Folk Music, Opera, Broadway Tunes, Reggae, Classical and Pop. There are many more types of music available for download, including groups as specific as Irish Ballads, Italian Love Songs, etc. The cost you will pay (usually per tune) will vary greatly from site to site. For that reason it is a good idea to visit a number of sites before settling on one. You will find some sites have a library consisting of every known artist and 100,000,000 different tracks. Other sites are much more limited; some are specialized and only offer certain genres of music. It is well worth you time to do your homework upfront. More than likely, once youve started downloading music, youll make far fewer trips to the CD/record stores. Be forewarned; if you choose to download free music from illegal sites you are breaking the law. Because of the huge losses the artists and music industry have incurred, more and more states and countries are imposing harsh penalties for those who knowingly download music illegally. Many of the sites which claim to offer free, unlimited, legal downloads are just out and out lying. What they actually offer to consumers is stolen (also known as pirated) music and this practice is against the law. Depending on where you live, if you are caught downloading pirated music, you can face any number of legal consequences. It hardly seems rational to break the law to obtain free music downloads, when you can buy legal versions at very reasonable prices. What do we mean by reasonable? Well, many sites offer packages (usually per month) where songs can cost as little as $0.25 to download. Other sites offer downloads at a cost of about $0.99 per song (without a package plan) and that is still really cheap. You can download songs to your Mp3, cell phone or laptop and have favorite tunes with you wherever you go. You can purchase package deals such as $10 per month for a certain number of songs, etc. and have good quality, legal music available to you at any time. While it seems most people download to MP3 players, quite a few are now downloading music to cell phones, PDAs or directly to their hard drive. You can have music with you wherever you go and it will not cost you an arm and a leg.
