Vacations are great summer solutions that can keep everybody happy. But if you are gearing up for a summer vacation getaway with the kids in tow, it is important that you exercise some tough love and find things to occupy their time. If you don’t, they’ll be constantly bugging you about one thing or another. To keep your sanity during the summer holidays, read on for tips on fighting summer holiday stress: 1. Try to travel light. Do not feel obliged to carry all of your kid’s diapers (if he still uses them) or favorite toys. Likewise, you do not really need five sets of bikinis and seven pairs of jeans. Parents always tend to pack too much and more than what is really needed. A good rule to practice during packing for your summer holiday is to put everything you think you need on the bed then ditch half of it. Pick only your most favorite pair of jeans and the most versatile pieces of clothing you have. Do the same for you kids. You can always use the hotel’s laundry service if you run out of things to wear. 2. Go online for tickets and accommodations. Airports are always a nightmare especially when you have kids clinging to the back of your coat. Purchase tickets and book your seats online to reduce the level of airport craziness. The same goes for hotel accommodations. It is easier to reserve rooms in advance especially if you have to get the big ones or several small ones. If you want to reduce stress further, consider booking an airport hotel the night before you fly. This may mean that you have to leave home 12 hours earlier but it can save you from stressed-we’re-late-have-we-got-the passports dash in the morning. 3. Search for kid-friendly activities in your destination prior to flying out. Before you fly off to some island for your summer getaway, think about your kids. Lounging in the spa all day may be your idea of a summer vacation but it’s different for kids. They want to spend time outdoors. So if you’re going to take them on vacation, find a place that will give you the relaxation you want with activities that can keep your kids busy during your stay. Swimming classes and sports clinics are some of the things to look out for. 4. Try to go early or later in the summer. Peak summer season in towards the middle when everyone has settled to enjoy and had ample time to prepare. If you want a truly stress-free summer vacation, go early in the season before anyone realizes it’s summer already or towards the end when everyone is preparing for fall. Fewer crowds mean less stress for you and kids. 5. Practice relaxation techniques. Relaxation techniques come in handy when you find yourself on the verge of shouting at your kids or getting frustrated at all the high jinks that they will get into during the summer. Deep breathing and meditation will work wonder in helping you relieve stress. If you have an anxiety disorder, be sure to get your antidepressants and anxiety medications refilled before going on vacation.
