Getting Along with Satellite Cell Phones

Like many people, business travel is now a total blur for me. I don't even think about where I'm going when I pack anymore, beyond knowing whether I should bring heavy jackets or not. I simply haul out my travel toiletry kit, throw a few suits in my bag, grab something casual to wear if I have a chance to go out, and something nice in case a client or host wants to take me out for dinner. Really, it's that simple. Sometimes I throw in a book, in case I find myself with spare time to read, but other than on the flight itself, I rarely get much reading done. Having been doing this for the past fifteen years, I've gotten it down.

Fortunately, some things have changed in a big way over the past few years, and communication devices are one of them. I'll probably sound old if I say this, but I remember when pagers were the really hip, cool thing to have. I know, old school. Lately though, I've been really pleased to see how prevalent international cell phone rentals have become. They really are the best option for those traveling internationally. I can speak for business travelers, anyway. International cell phones have totally changed the way I travel. Not only do I have a consistent number for business calls, but my friends and family have a way to contact me if they need to. It used to be that I would have to check in along the way, giving them the new hotel phone number and how long I'd be there. Now, I rest easy, knowing that my international cell phone has me covered.

There are other conveniences too- such as having a locked-in rate, not having to pick up new phones or parts in different countries, being able to carry a PDA phone with all your data with you, etc. The difference it makes in my travel is amazing. One benefit that you might not think of on your own is that you will be much freer to travel about. I don't need to be in my hotel room to make phone calls, so I can experience a little more of the places I'm visiting.

There is one other trick that I have learned along the way, and that is this: when you're using an international cell phone rental or satellite cell phones (for travel to distant locations), having a separate business card for that trip can make all the difference. Not only can you give out the phone number that is current to, but you can indicate the duration of that number's relevance and pass on your permanent contact info if you so desire.
