If you are currently in debt or have experienced debt in the past then you understand how potentially stressful it can be. Not only does it influence how you live your life but it can also be invasive, as creditors ring you up asking for outstanding debt. And many people feel like this because of credit card debt. Let's face it, credit cards are easy to get and the industry is always coming up with gimmicks to make a card more attractive. Credit cards are useful but the insistence that they are the only way to make purchases, has, and continues to get people into trouble. This seems to be a cultural shift from yesteryear. Whereas, in previous generations the idea of credit was deeply distrusted and avoided, today it seems to be the only way to live. People live on credit and this is generally the root of the debt problem. This article will discuss how to get out of credit card debt Getting out of any debt requires a degree of organization. In financial terms the easiest way to get organized is to set up some kind of budget. As most people are paid monthly and most bills are squared away on a monthly basis it would seem to make sense to set up a monthly budget. Work out essential and non-essential items. Essential items are things you need to live and earn a living - so food and accommodation expenses. Also traveling expenses to and from work or college. Non-essential items might be indulgences like buying gadgets, eating out and other forms of entertainment. If your monthly income can support things like pay TV and eating out then you can do them. But make sure you have covered the essential items first and make sure that some money is left over to service your credit card debt. Another problem with debt is that people have numerous debts that are payable at different times throughout the month. This makes it hard to organize a budget. Debt consolidation is a way around this as it effectively lumps all the debts together and you pay off one (larger) amount each month. It doesn't solve the debt problem but merely makes it more convenient to manage. Also, if the lure of credit cards is still too great then use debit cards. They are the same as credit cards, in terms of convenience, but they are linked to your bank account. So any purchases that you make will be checked against your available balance. If the funds are not in the account the card will be rejected. This puts some external limit on your credit cards purchases that might help you to control your spending. Another measure to tackle credit card debt is to seek professional help. There are many free or fee based debt counseling services around. They will help you implement much of the ideas listed above. They may even suggest getting a one off loan to square off your debts, that is negotiated at a lower rate. They will help you set up a budget that services the debts you have. They will help you stick to this budget through encouragement and motivation.
