What should you do to learn how to become an electrician? Have Interest and Aptitude While you are still in high school, you should already find out if you have the ability to learn how to become an electrician. Showing interest in the field is a good first requirement. You also need to check however if you have the technical aptitude to pursue studies that will teach you how to become an electrician. You can easily check through a school aptitude test. You can also roughly determine your aptitude by checking how well you do in mathematics, science and electrical subjects. Aside from technical interest and aptitude, you should also be able to work well with your hands in coordination with your eyes. Physical fitness and ease of movement are also a requirement since you may have to get into unusual spaces when you perform wiring. Some employers may also require skill in technical English comprehension for manual interpretation. You could fall into a scam trap and get into a bad program. You can avoid this by entering a reputable school that has a known affiliation with groups and organizations that represent and regulate the field of electrical education. Knowing how to become an electrician however will take more than just attending classes. A good program that will teach you how to become an electrician will take a lot of patience, perseverance and effort to pursue. Before you can become an electrician, you need to study for 4 years. You will spend this time in more than 2000 hours of combined theoretical and practical training. In your classes, you will learn more than just how to solder or wire since you will also be taught how to come up with entire electrical systems. Study Both Specializations Whether you choose to be employed or have your own company, there are two areas you can specialize in, maintenance and construction. You may specialize but it is always a good idea to know both areas well. Obtain a License A license is a sign of expert credibility. It is also a requirement among most employers and clients. You should be prepared to tackle comprehensive electrical theories and codes in an exam. Continue Studying Learning how to become an electrician does not end after you leave school and pass the license exams. New trends, methods and guidelines may emerge for your field. The only way you can compete with updated younger electricians is to keep on learning how to become an electrician. Some employers may automatically provide the opportunity for further training classes. If they do not, then you would have to actively pursue further training yourself.
