How to Choose the Right Dog For Your Family

Have you been thinking about how to choose the right dog for your family? Sometimes when we see puppies, our logic goes out the window and we choose them simply because they're so cute.

But as we all know, little puppies grow into big dogs. Therefore, it is critically important that we never rushed into taking a puppy home but we consider several factors before choosing a dog.

Before you go and get a puppy, there are many things you need to consider.

Now of course, not all dogs are the same. They come in different sizes, different shapes, different amounts of energy, and require different amounts of attention from their owners.

Some dogs are very aggressive. Others are very passive. Some dogs do very well with children. And, we all know there are some breeds of dogs that do far better with adults than with children.

Choosing the right dog is critically important if you have children in the family. Do you remember the movie 101 Dalmatians? After that movie came out a few years ago thousands of children all wanted a new Dalmatian Puppy. How foolish!

Everything was perfect while the puppy was small, but once the Dalmatian began to grow-up, the kids and the parents soon realized that most Dalmatians are not the right type of dog for a kid. They are great dogs and they make great pets but they have too much energy and can be too aggressive for children.

Unfortunately, many of these dogs were then given away to various animal rescue organizations. Don't make a similar mistake. This is why it is so critical to research the characteristics of a dog before you bring it into your home.

So when making your decision about what type of dog to bring into the family start by thinking about how the dog will be when it's a full-size dog. Don't make a quick and rash decision about which dog to bring home. Make sure that you ask yourself the right questions about size, energy, and the territorial nature of this particular breed.

What are your wants, needs, desires, and housing situation? Do you live in a big house or a small apartment? Why would you ever consider a puppy that would grow into a large dog if you live in a very small home?

Do you live in a country or do you live in the city? If you live in the city, why would you select a dog with lots of energy? Make sure that if you choose an active and energetic dog that you have plenty of time to spend with it. Also make sure that there are plenty of parks in your area that you can take the dog to and play.

Lastly, let us remember that being a responsible dog owner isn't only about fun and games. There is a lot of work involved in training them and giving them the proper attention that they need.

Don't be one of the types of people that take a puppy home and later find that you don't have enough time for the dog. Remember that puppies have special needs and need to be cared for throughout the day. Also it's important to remember that puppies like to chew on your favorite furniture. You will need to read further about how to prevent this annoying tendency.

When choosing a puppy you need to be patient and make sure you choose wisely. You need to consider how the dog will act as a puppy and when he grows-up. You also need to make sure you have enough time to spend with the dog and that the dog will always fit into your family and living situations.
