We all know that compared to other dogs, Labradors can grow really big. Even with their comparatively large sizes however, a lot of families still consider them great additions to the family. This is because one great quality of the Labrador retriever is its natural friendliness. You shouldn't forget though that just like other dogs, Labradors need to be properly trained too. Train as a Puppy

Labradors are just like other dogs that grow more stubborn and difficult to control through the years. This means that it is important to begin Labrador retriever training while your dog is still a puppy. Just like babies, Labrador puppies are still very manageable and open to teaching. They haven't yet developed set behavior patterns. Most of us also know that early Labrador retriever training is necessary because adult Labs are already too big to physically control and manage.

Socialize

Like most other dogs, Labradors need to be socialized. Socialization as part of your Labrador retriever training program will help your dog get used to other animals and humans.

You can start socializing a young Labrador by taking it for walks and trips to moderately populated areas. You could also take your pet to parks where it can be exposed to different sights and sounds. Don't forget though that you should never leave your Labrador alone during socialization so that you can easily come to its rescue during moments of anxiety.

Use the Leash and Start with Basics

The first portion of Labrador retriever training should involve teaching it to sit, stay and come. You should however, combine this basic training with leash training. Adult Labradors who are not used to leashes may pull away from a leash. A leash resistant Lab could be a big heavy problem for you. You should want your Labrador to be comfortable with a leash early on.

A crucial Labrador retriever training tip is consistency. This may mean that you may have to ask everyone in the family to participate in your Labrador retriever training program. Family involvement will ensure that your dog never gets confused over different rules and ways of doing things. Inconsistent training will basically negate everything you've worked hard to teach your dog.

Exercise Regularly

Labrador retrievers are naturally energetic so you would need to channel its energy to prevent it from engaging in undesirable behavior. The best way to do this is through play and exercise. Labrador retrievers are called such because they love to retrieve so games of fetch should be part of your Labrador retriever training. Other active forms of diversion such as regular walks and outdoor trips may also work well for your dog.

Use Positive Reinforcement

Labrador retriever training should ideally involve only positive reinforcement. This is really just a fancy name which means that you shouldn't use force and punishment on your Lab. Instead of traditional punishment techniques, you should instead reward and praise your dog for good behavior.
