Ignatius Piazza: "Gun Free Zones Are Sitting Duck Zones"

Ignatius Piazza is the founder and director of America's largest, most successful gun training school, Front Sight Firearms Training Institute. Every year, Front Sight trains more students in gun training than all other major shooting schools in the nation combined. With a pedigree like that, Dr. Ignatius Piazza realizes that he cannot sit on his laurels and enjoy his success; he knows he must use the authority he has earned. As such, he has taken a very pivotal, important stance in the fight against school shootings. For many years, Dr. Ignatius Piazza has supported the training and arming of teachers in all schools around the nation, saying that the only way to prevent school shootings is to get guns into the hands of those who can do something about the shootings.

Dr. Ignatius Piazza has called ideas like putting "Gun Free Zone" signs up around schools the biggest waste of money and time a school district could invest in to safeguard the school - especially when he has all but shouted aloud that he is willing to foot the bill for any three teachers from all school districts in the nation to get firearms training at Front Sight.

Obviously, when he hears of plans like the one in the works in Richmond, VA, Dr. Ignatius Piazza becomes disgusted. The Richmond school district intends to spend about $35,000 putting up signs around the area's schools announcing that the schools are "gun free zones", hoping that reminding and informing potential criminals that penalties for possessing a firearm within 1,000 feet of school are higher than normal will keep them from doing so.

As one can see by looking at the press releases Dr. Ignatius Piazza has released, he considers actions like that a complete idiocy, as one would hope the average person would (but apparently the Richmond-ians don't). Dr. Ignatius Piazza's stance is precisely what every other sane American's view on this matter is: to announce that an area is a 'gun free zone' only means that criminals know there will be no one to stop them if they use a gun.

In the words of Katherine Tam, "Consider an analogy: Suppose a criminal is stalking you or your family. Would you feel safe putting a sign in front of your home saying, "This Home Is a Gun-Free Zone"? Probably not, because such a sign would merely tell criminals that they have little to worry about."

One of Dr. Piazza's favorite examples to cite is a problem Israel had in the 1970's. "In the early 70's, Israel was faced with much greater problems of armed terrorist attacks on schools. The cry for more gun control was heard then too, but Israel very carefully analyzed all possible options before adopting the proactive position of arming and training their teachers. School shootings stopped and terrorists looked for easier targets."

Israel now enjoys a school shooting rate of absolutely zero, because all teachers must be trained and armed with a semi-automatic sidearm. Shouldn't America learn from the good example of others? We can keep our children safe, we can keep our educators safe. Dr. Ignatius Piazza and Front Sight Firearms Training Institute are trying to show you how, shouldn't we listen?
