Ignatius Piazza: The Difference Between Owing Firearms and Protecting Your Family Them

Dr. Ignatius Piazza founded Front Sight Firearms Training Institute after years of his own personal firearms training.

He realized that a gun is a tool. Like any tool - hammer, fork, pen - it can be used for its proper purpose, or can be misused. But to actually be able to defend yourself and your home against the criminals takes firearms training.

This was a realization Dr. Ignatius Piazza had after an incident, in 1988 in his own home, of a drive-by shooting. He was not injured, but recognized that had the attack become centered on his own home, he would not have known what to do. He owned guns, and had practiced with them at the local firing range, but all the other skills were missing.

It was at this point that Dr. Ignatius Piazza came to understand that just having a gun and even knowing how to shoot was only part of the solution, as the terror of being attacked causes you to shoot only half as well as you do on your best day on the range.

Dr. Ignatius Piazza went on a search for the training he needed to be competent. And along the way he developed a strong intention to give this ability to other regular citizens to use. The end result was the founding of Front Sight Firearms Training Institute.

While at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute the students of course learn to shoot, they also learn the other auxiliary skills, such as gun safety, how to draw from a holster, where to secure a gun in your home. And very importantly, students learn how to be aware of their surroundings, to avoid dangerous situations requiring a weapon. These skills are tailored for age 5 through adult. Even small children can learn to be aware of their environment, and avoid trouble. Teens can learn Internet safety, and how to resist influences from their peers.

An important point that Dr. Piazza makes is that which gun you own is not important; it's what you can do with it. Front Sight Firearms Training Institute is set up to allow students to learn to use whatever firearm they own. In fact, every time you visit Front Sight you will always hear the quote, "Any gun will do, if you will do."

What Dr. Ignatius Piazza discovered was that whatever skill you may have in the safe and secure firing range, will decrease by about half in any real situation. Understandably, on the range all the guns are directed away from you. The instant YOU may be the target, or one of your family or friends, the situation changes dramatically. Unfortunately, that half is probably just not good enough. The criminal threatening you may just not care if a bystander is hit, and isn't caring what laws are broken, or if someone "gets hurt."

The solution is to train to be twice as good as you may ever need to be. This is where Dr. Ignatius Piazza's personal experience with years of training comes in. Not only was he looking for skill for himself, but also for what training methods work. With a combination of dry (no ammo) practice of gun handling, spot-on coaching by the Front Sight instructors and classroom instruction, students actually get excellent skills. Skills they can be sure they can apply in real world situations.
