Japanese Animation - Also Known as Anime

Japan is a proud country famous for its efficient cars, raw dishes, aesthetically-driven culture, and popular fashion. It is also famous for something the world, young and old, celebrates and labels as purely Japanese - anime.

While you can find animation and cartoons from cultures around the world, the abbreviation "anime" is only used in reference to Japan's distinctive cartoon art.

You may be interested in the history of anime. Traditional Japanese art included visions of floating worlds made from woodblock art. North American animation started influencing Japanese artists after World War II, and soon the mixture of both of these influences resulted in Manga. Manga evolved into anime, and you can still see many of its strongest features in today's versions, including giant robots and the complex and mature storylines.

The genres and styles of the cartoon represent the characteristics of Anime. Anime has a variety of genres with thematic elements. The themes include both simple and complex story lines, involving humor, romance, social commentary, action, brutal violence, horror, superheroes, even pornography. Almost no two characters are alike.

While the characters and style are always different, there are a few elements that are common to all anime drawings. The most recognizable of these features are the large, exaggerated eyes of the Anime characters. These large eyes effectively portray the characters' emotions. The characters also have much larger bodies than heads. Strong physical reactions in the comics often depict emotion. One example is of the bleeding nose and teary eyes representing intense anger, love, embarrassment or stress.

Anime is not only celebrated in TV and prints but also in fashion and the Web.
