It was expected that Coach Steve Kragthorpe of the Louisville Cardinals will throw in the towel after the team lost to Rutgers University's Scarlet Knights. He stood his ground and declared that he will not quit and that he will stay on as coach until his contract ends on 2011. The Cardinals had a very dismal season, said to be the worst one since the 80's. The last time that they had a losing season was in 1997. Coach Kragthorpe is on his second season with the team after he took over the job as head coach when then coach Bobby Petrino left to be with the Atlanta Falcons. Petrino made it possible for the Cardinals to be a part of the 2006 Orange Bowl. Coach Kragthorpe recognizes the fact that people are disappointed but said that he would stay on to put it right. According to him that the team is still intact as seen in how it played hard until the end during that game with the Scarlet Knights despite its being undermanned. The Cardinals was behind that it dashed any hopes of making it to the Orange Bowl. Despite the bleak showing this season, Coach Kragthorpe is optimistic that next year will be a much better one. A number of their players who came back did pretty well. The team was besieged with problems since he took the helm with a number of players leaving due to transfers or were dismissed. There were also a number who got injured. Hopefully the problem with depth in players rank will be addressed. There are also some issues in the staffing with their defensive coordinator Ron English being considered as head coach in two universities. When asked to comment about this information, Coach Kragthorpe replied that any staffing issues will be dealt with later and that he will be back in 2009. Tom Jurich, the university's athletic director and the person responsible for his hiring continues to stand by him. The extension of Coach Kragthorpe's contract has never been mentioned and even Coach Kragthorpe himself is not expecting one but he would rather concentrate on the chance to better lead the Cardinal's football program. They had hoped that 2008 will be a better year for them with their having a game schedule that included approximately eight games in the home ground and the travel to other games were shorter because these were in Syracuse and Memphis. Though Coach Kragthorpe has declared that next year a stronger team will emerge yet they have to contend with more difficulties such as a more grueling schedule. They will also have to face Utah which has not suffered any loss this season plus the fact that the Cardinals themselves have yet to name their quarterback. There were a lot of changes in the past and there will be more to come. That would include the players who will ultimately be named and the same goes for the coaching staff. But as Coach Kragthorpe said, they are in it for a long haul.
