Loving Him While He Loves His Sports

Like the majority of men in this country, my guy loves his sports. Not just one sport like baseball or football but all sports. I admire his passion for sports. There are times when I wish he'd love the arts just a little, however.

Just watching sports on TV is not enough for my husband. He's no longer a spring chicken, but he still plays on a men's softball team. Playing on this team is the highlight of his summer. I've asked repeatedly why playing softball is so important, especially when the games are played in the heat of the summer. While he doesn't use these words, I've decided it's because it enables him to re-live his glory days. In fact it's the closest thing to re-living his childhood that he has. It's like playing on the little league team again, but without the grouchy coach and meddling parents.

I suppose as long as you know what your body is capable of, the exercise is all upside. Goodness knows, working in an office is a sedentary situation and while you are just sitting there hardly moving, the stress builds with deadlines and dealing with an impatient boss. Getting outside gets him much needed fresh air and perhaps the slightest tan.

What I like the best is that our kids have a great role model in their father. We happen to have 2 daughters but my husband treats them no differently than he would a boy when it comes to sports. I have to admit that neither of them have cottoned to softball but we do have an avid basketball player and the other has joined the school's volleyball team. Team participation brings about a better perspective on life and great coping skills they can use in whatever direction their life leads them.

For our family, the sports events can often become a real family affair. The girls gather and we even pop some popcorn and watch the game. We often split over which team we root for but we all are just good friends when we are done. Sports events are typically much better family viewing than many other shows I see now on prime time TV.

If you're still looking for the positive side of your man's obsession with sports I have one last point to consider. You can always find a good gift idea. Sports gifts come in all shapes and sizes, expensive and cheap, collectibles and useable goods. My husband will never say he has too many baseball cards or ball caps. So I can always come up with an idea for Father's day besides a new tie.
