Online gaming is a recent phenomenon that has made it possible for people the world over to enter a virtual realm. A realm where they act out there wildest fantasies, take for example the hugely popular MMORPG game, world of warcraft. Players can choose to be one of many fictional races and can interact with other players. There is just not mindless violence involved here, players actually talk, speak and befriend each other. And if they so wish they can actually complete missions together.

Not all online games are designed to be action based, you can match your wits with players online, playing games like chess, checkers, backgammon and the ever popular casino games like blackjack and poker. The possibilities are limitless. Online games were not as popular initially, the speeds at which users accessed the internet was the limiting factor. Most online sites allow users to play free online games, however the problem was that most games were designed in flash or similar technologies. This required a high bandwidth, especially for real time games where more than one participant participated simultaneously. However all that changed dramatically, once internet access speeds increased and internet access became far cheaper.

Online games are generally divided into three categories

a) Arcade style online games

These are games that you would find in older arcades, like pinball, shoot-em up games. These games are usually inspired by the original and are known to bring about a feeling of nostalgia especially for older users. The many casino style games like poker, blackjack are also a part of this category. Although most people agree that online games and gambling games should be treated as separate entities, however there is no denying that arcade games like poker, blackjack are a part of this genre of online games.

d) Strategy based online games

These include games that require, creative and intellectual input from players. Games like tic-tac toe, and other similar strategy based games fall into this category. Strategy based games are also becoming increasingly popular among people from all ages.

c) Quiz show based online games

Popular quiz shows like Who wants to be a millionaire, twenty questions have all been converted into a user friendly online format. Players from all over the world can log in and play against each other in real time. A thoroughly enjoyable and educational experience. Quiz show based online games are becoming increasingly popular among young and older players.
