Most poker players will fiddle with their chips during play. They will do all sorts of little tricks with their chips, while betting they will either throw them down or put them in little piles. An experienced poker player will pick up on how people play around with their chips and literally cash in on it. Here are some little points to observe. The chips are suddenly silent: You'll find this person in every poker game. They'll sit there and shuffle their chips before, during, and after every hand. Bet, shuffle, fold, shuffle; they never stop shuffling their chips! Well, almost never. Every once in a while you'll see this person make a bet and for once their poker chips will go silent. Is this a made hand they're hoping to get paid on? Probably not. The people who know that they have a good set of cards are unperturbed. They fiddle with their chips with a satisfied air. But the people who have suddenly stopped playing with their chips are obviously on edge. They are wishing that you are not going to call. Now you will need to up your bets, as these unfortunate players are doomed to fold. Flinging down the chips: This tell can be a little trickier. There are people out there who splash the pot because they like the sound it makes. What you're looking for, however, is someone who's been putting their poker chips in nice neat stacks and placing them in the pot. When this person suddenly sends a hailstorm of poker chips into the pot, something's up. Remember that in poker strong is weak and weak is strong so when you have a careful player make an uncharacteristically aggressive move, you're probably looking at a bluff. Raise. At the very least you'll gain more information about your adversary so you'll know what it means the next time they splash the pot. Poker chip tells aren't about looking for something a player does habitually. The best tells are breaks in a player's usual pattern. If someone has been doing something throughout the game and suddenly their behavior changes, then something is up. It may be worth a few bucks to find out what that change means. Most players not only play with their poker chips during the game, they actually practice playing with them at home. This ends up becoming an unconscience behavior and when players aren't paying attention to what they're doing, they're likely to give away valuable information. So watch the poker chips at your next game and see if you can peel a few extra dollars off that guy who won't stop shuffling his dang chips!
