Storing Shelves Help you Organize the Garage

Your garage may have been built to house your cars, but it might also be the best storage space you have in your home. Garage storage is utilized by many a family as a way to keep the clutter out of the house. With a few shelving additions, your garage can be the perfect space for all of that "what are we going to do with this thing" stuff.

Garage shelves are found in two forms: Prefab and site built shelves. If money is on your mind, site built shelves are the least expensive ones. All the tools you'll need to make garage storage a reality can be found at any hardware store.

A basic model of a garage shelf can be made of a plain piece of plywood or a bit of lumber mounted on your walls with bracket able to bear heavy loads. Attach the brackets to the studs with long screws and then attach the shelf to those brackets. A brace on each stud will add extra security.

You can also go for so called floor supported garage shelves. To use floor supported shelves, you need to consider the height of the walls and the depth of the shelves, to make sure they can accommodate what you need them to hold.

In fact, what you want to put on your garage shelves dictates a lot of things about your shelves. If you're going to be storing lots of little, bitty things, make sure the nails aren't so close together that they won't let you set these things flat. If you're going to storing big, heavy things, make sure you shelves can support them and that the shelves are not so high that you can't get your things down safely.

The best choice for prefabricated garage shelves has to be Steel shelves. If you are storing lightweight things, then plastic shelving may be ok, but if your shelves will be storing anything heavy, go for the steel. Steel does have its downside: it can't be cut to meet your needs, so you will have to find precut pieces that work for you.

Other things to look for in a garage shelf is the ability to adjust the shelf as your needs change. Most people are always picking up things that need garage storing, so shelves that can expand as your collection of things to store in the garage does can really come in handy.
