To maintain Pug health there are several grooming requirements such as brushing at least once a week and bathing whenever it is required. By brushing often you can reduce the amount of fur that is left behind on your furniture, cars and clothes by the Pug who sheds a lot of fur. While the daily care of a Pug doesn't require much, it is important that you spend extra time with the wrinkles around the Pugs face. The Pug will often go around sticking their nose into many things due to their curious nature. This is why you need to clean the wrinkles regularly, otherwise dirt can buildup. The wrinkles can also accumulate moisture if they aren't cleaned regularly which can lead to itching, irritation and sometimes a bad infection. It isn't that hard to clean the wrinkles, just use a soft tissue to clean the wrinkles regularly so you can avoid dirt and moisture buildup, which can result in Pug health issues. It is also important that you regularly trim your Pugs nails as you would with all breeds. However, Pug health depends on these trimmings since the nails can become caught on blankets or other things when they grow too long. Longer nails also make is painful for the Pug to walk. There are many vet and grooming places that will trim the nails for you if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. Just make sure you keep an eye on your Pugs nails since they will grow fast. The one area where Pugs are very different from other breeds is in the fact that they really like water. So when it comes to bathing the only things to avoid is getting water in the ear, which can cause infections and getting shampoo in their sensitive eyes. But if your Pug really likes the water and insists on playing then let them do this for a while, so you can make bath time an enjoyable event for both yourself and your Pug. Another important part of Pug health is to keep the ears dry and clean. Since Pugs have a narrow ear canal they are prone to ear infections. Wipe the ears clean regularly using a soft tissues or cotton ball, but you should never use a cotton swab. Take your Pug to the vet if you notice them scratching their ears or shaking their head a lot. It is also a good idea to seek medical attention if you notice a weird smell coming from the ears since this is a good sign that they have a fungus or infection. Since Pugs are so prone to ear infections it is likely that you will have a bottle or two of old ear drops around the house. However, you should never use these since they will make the infections worse. The only time you should use the old ear drops is if you cleaned the bottle very well and have stored the drops in the refrigerator, even then it is best only to use them under the approval of a licensed veterinarian.
