The City of Calgary: Epitome of Cleanliness

The Garbage Collection program also offers a free-for-service basis for commercial establishments. All the garbage collected from the program is ensured to be disposed in a proper way. Calgary has 3 landfill garbage-depositing areas, namely: Spyhill Landfill Site, East Calgary Landfill Site, and Shepard Landfill Site.

Calgary is also proud to announce that it is one of the few cities, which offers a residential recycling program. The aim of Calgary’s local government is to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills to just 20%, and recycling or recovering 80% of waste materials by the year 2020. One of the sub-programs under the residential recycling program is the Community Recycling Depots. This is where residents’ disposes mixed paper, cardboard, newspapers, magazines, clear or colored glass, food and beverage containers, plastic bags, etc in approximately 50 recycling depots scattered in the whole city. Another sub-program is the appliances and electronics recycling which aids residents and commercial establishments on how they could properly dispose their electronic wastes. Other major sub-programs under the residential recycling program are the Organics recycling, Paint and motor oil recycling, and Tire recycling.
