The Definition of Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine is becoming a popular choice for health-conscious individuals, yet many of them are unsure just exactly what the term encompasses. Many of them have even asked their doctors, "What is alternative medicine?", yet they get no clear answer.

The bottom line of alternative medicine is that it is something used in the stead of the common medical practices people are accustomed to. What you are used to would probably be something like this. You getting sick and hauling yourself to the doctor's office. You get to sit and wait with other patients, thinking that hopefully you would not catch anything. Finally, you get to see the doctor and you are given a prescription. You stop by the drugstore for it and then go home. After a day or two, you might or might not be back to normal.

Alternative medicine can be compared to a tree having many branches. The branches of the tree represent the different practices that belong to one trunk, which represents alternative medicine. A patient can select from a number of methods available depending on the symptoms of the illness. Aside from that, alternative medicine can also be used to improve a persons health and not only for curing illnesses.

Alternative medicine is also known as a natural medicine of the world. Few of these practices that are commonly used include acupuncture, herbal medicines, homeopathy, chiropractic and naturopathy. These are some of the most recommended branches of alternative medicine.

* Acupuncture

* Homeopathy

* Herbal Medicine

* Naturopathy

* Chiropractic

Acupuncture uses fine needles to regulate the energy of the body into a more cohesive pattern, and is used for many types of sicknesses and well-being issues.

Homeopathy works under the assumption that the body can be cured of anything that is wrong with it by using just a tiny amount of material from nature, such as herbs or flowers, that would create symptoms of an illness in man or beast. By doing this, the body rallies, and begins to heal itself.

Herbal medicine is the use of any part of a plant, from its roots to its leaves, as an aid to relieving sicknesses and pain, as well as promoting feelings of calm and well-being.

Naturopathy is only for routine afflictions. People who believe in this practice also believe that the body has the ability to make itself well. This particular alternative medicine then is all about nature playing a huge part in the health of a person.

Chiropractic does not heal. By adjusting the spine, a chiropractor clears the nerve pathways in the body, allowing the body to make itself well.

So how is alternative medicine defined? It is many people's way of life and it continues to attract more individuals everywhere.
