The Different Classifications of Acne Explained

Most teens and young adults have most likely gone through the stressing times that result from acne. But in order to help one's self with the dreaded prospect of acne, a certain amount of knowledge is required to accurately implement an acne-fighting regime each day. Doing so will help fight current breakouts, and prevent new breakouts from ever occurring.

Types Of Acne You May Encounter

One of the most common types of acne is what is commonly called the blackhead. A blackhead is formed when pores on the face are blocked- but only partially. This allows bacteria and residue to slowly drain out. Note that the black dot that results is not dirt, but rather the skin's reaction to oxygen in the affected area. Blackheads are usually longer lasting than other types of acne such as the whitehead.

The whitehead is similar to the blackhead, except that it completely blocks the pore and contains a white colored head. Bacteria and sebum are completely trapped under the skin in this case, which makes the appearance of a white tip. Whiteheads generally don't last as long as blackheads, and are usually more unsightly in appearance.

Next we have papules, which are inflammations on the skin that contain no "heads." Instead, these lesions only appear as a red mark that can often be large in size. It is important to not squeeze papules, as it will do no good. In fact, squeezing a papule often results in scarring or further inflammation that takes longer to alleviate had it not been tampered with.

Pustules share qualities of both whiteheads and papules. Pustules will have the white head of a whitehead and also carry the red inflammation and swelling that papules have. Like papules, pustules can easily result in scarring and infection if they are tampered with. Because of this, it is recommended that you do not squeeze or drain pustules unless absolutely necessary.

Solutions To Fixing The Different Acne Types

For whiteheads and blackheads, it is generally not advised to further inflame or bother the affected area. These smaller lesions on the skin generally go away by themselves without much harm. Whiteheads are generally more noticeable, however, and proper care should be taken if trying to tamper with them.

When it comes to pustules and papules, there can be relief by simply getting a cortisone shot. This will help reduce swelling and inflammation that characterizes these types of acne. Try not to tamper with either type of acne, especially papules, as further infection will result.

If there is no possible way to ignore the acne, you must drain the acne only under sterile conditions. By doing this you lower the chances of infection and inflammation by a large amount. Take note that you should never force the drainage of acne, as this will worsen the inflammation. Following these tips and the aforementioned tips will help you better combat your acne in the most trying years of one's life.
