Most people that are visiting the Big Island of Hawaii stay at the west side of the island, mainly because of the great climate there, with less rain and wind than on the east side. Kailua-Kona is the most popular city in the west for tourists. In the area around Kona you find a lot of white-sand beaches with calm, gentle waves. The city and its surroundings offers natural beauty that can bring you into a graceful state of calmness. Kona is a relaxed and calm city, located at the foot of Hualalai volcano. This city has a lot to offer for its visitors; a good amount of hotels and vacation rentals, bars and restaurants and a lot of interesting historical sites, making it the perfect destination for your holiday. Kona is an ancient city and in the early years it was home to numerous Hawaiian kings. When the missionaries came in the 19th century, the expansion continued, with a lot of churches and houses being built. They also turned Kona into the main seaport of the Big Island. In the middle of the sea you find Kailua Pier which gives you a good view over the whole area. This is also a perfect spot to watch the sunset from. Just at the side of the pier you find Kamakahonu Beach. Here you can spend your day, relaxing in the sun on the white sand and swimming in the calm water. The beach is not too busy, but you can still find some beach activities. The water is great for snorkelling and there are canoe rentals. Along the seaside you find the main street Ali'i Drive. This is probably where you'll be spending most of your time in Kona, since most activities are located here. This is where most hotels,restaurants and shops can be found and also a good amount of the cultural and historical sites. Kona is situated close to the Airport and is therefore easily accessible. It's popular to have it as your main location when you're at the Big Island and make daily trips to other areas of the island. In the area you can easily activate yourself by going on a boat cruise or by doing some hiking or horse-back riding. Kona is the great place to have as a base for your Big Island vacation. Enjoy your stay here with its perfect mixture of modern and ancient.
