The Heart's Pathway

HeartMath LLC is a research institution specializing in the heart and brain relationship. Howard Martin is the Executive Vice President of the company. He's also the co-author of The HeartMath Solution, and he developed the Nightingale-Conant tape series, The HeartMath Method.

The heart and brain communicate via physiological mechanisms to influence perception, emotion, and overall health. The heart has been discovered to be just as important a piece of intelligence as the brain is. In a nutshell, the brain tells you what to think, but the heart tells you how to think.

Obviously when you're carrying on a conversation with someone, your brain is in control of what you say. The heart, however, is in control of your tone. It tells you when to back down and when to step up to the plate. For centuries, this idea was only found in philosophy and religion.

HeartMath LLC wants to change the way people look at the heart. Actually, it's the reason "math" is included in the company's name. This math isn't about numbers. It's the representation of understanding the heart as an organ that sends healing signals to the brain and body.

Howard Martin believes there are four distinct ways that messages are received in the body through the heart. In the first way, researchers have mapped neural traffic in the body and have found that more messages are send from the heart than are returned by the brain. The heart is composed of complex nervous system cells, cells that are generally only found in the brain and spinal column.

In the second type of communication, blood pressure waves are sent through the body. These waves of blood through the arteries and veins are mediators of change in the electrical activity of the brain. This is a biophysical type of communication.

The third method is hormones. Howard believes that such hormones as oxytocin and cortisol are produced in the heart. Cortisol is the body's stress regulator, and oxytocin is known as "the love hormone" because it rises during relational situations like childbirth or sex.

Finally, the heart is both a biological organ and an electrical one. This is why cardiologists are able to perform EKG tests or implant pacemakers to regulate the rhythm of the heart. Electrical energy passes through the skin and extends into a person's space for about four feet. Positive or negative electrical energy can be sensed by others, allowing them to know your mood before ever speaking a word.
