In California, for example, some insurance companies will charge much higher rates for people with substandard credit. You might never have gotten a ticket or had an accident, but the higher rates will still affect you.

A less common disadvantage is that some people will use your insurance against you by wrecking their vehicle so they are no longer responsible for it. They deliberately cause an accident, then scam you with huge medical bills. Being insured makes you liable, despite being a good citizen, for the other person's behavior.

Shopping around for car insurance can be worthwhile. The first policy you find shouldn't necessarily be the one you buy. Car insurance agents sometimes hear that you had found a better rate, and strive to be competitive with each other. Discounts of up to ten percent of the policy cost are possible this way.

It pays to ensure that your insurance policy meets the minimum requirements for your state. While some states require more coverage for personal property or medical liability, others do not. Certain minimum values for uninsured or underinsured motorists are required as well.

Even worse, insurance companies aren't always licensed to practice in all states. If the company doesn't have a license for your state, you cannot acquire insurance that will meet legal standards. Be especially careful of companies that give you quotes online. Though most of them know and will tell you, it's still a good idea to make sure.

Friends or colleagues may be able to refer you to a wonderful agent who can be very effective in helping you obtain the best rates. Don't forget to ask about multiple policy discounts as well if this applies to you.

It's best to shop around to get the best deal possible. But it is also important to remember that it's not always a good idea just to go for the cheapest rate you can find. You may find that it's better to spend more money to get a policy from one of the bigger, better-known insurance companies.
