The steps to tie a tie and choosing the right tie

Two of the most important keys to wearing a tie right is choosing the one that best suits you and knowing the proper steps to tie a tie. You will look your very best with the right necktie and the perfect knot like a Windsor knot neatly tied in place. If you want to look your best in your suit for your interview or for a formal occasion, you have to pay equal attention to getting a good tie. Once you get yourself a good one, you can move on to learning the steps to tie a tie properly. It is also a good idea to start with a Windsor knot as it is one of the general purpose knots that you can get by with for a long, long time.

If this is your first time to go shopping for one, it may prove difficult to pick out the right tie. The main rule for buying a tie is that your tie pattern must be based on the design of your shirt. For formal occasions, a white dress shirt is always conservative and proper, and a dark coloured or red tie is safest to buy. On the other hand, if your idea of fun is in getting a bright coloured shirt, you should get a tie that is more subtle to balance it out. If you are wearing a dark shirt or a striped one, a brighter shade of tie will complement it nicely. When it comes to colour, you have to make sure that you choose one that is complementary but at the same time flexible. If you belong to a formal office, steer clear of those loud patterned or cartoon ties.

When choosing a tie, your main concern should be on three things: the quality, the material and the colour of the tie. Silk ties (made of 100% silk) are always best to have. Make sure that you pick one that is just the right thickness and length. If you are tall, go for a longer tie. The rule for tie length is that when tied in a properly fitted Windsor knot (or any other knot for that matter), the triangular point at the wide end of the tie should be able to meet your belt buckle. When you finally pick out the tie you like, never forget to double check that it is not damaged, smudged, or crinkled in any way.

As soon as you get a good tie that looks well on you and your suit, you can carry on with the proper steps to tie a tie on your newly bought necktie. Of course, you have to be very careful to do your Windsor knot on the tie to make sure that you do not create any unnecessarily wrinkles. As soon as you perfect the art of tie knotting on that nice tie, you are now ready to face that job interview or attend that special event with confidence and a big smile.
