There are now numerous employment opportunities for people who want to learn how to become an electrician. This is because electricity is now one of the major things that power society. Electricity is no longer just needed to provide light. It is also needed for air conditioning, refrigeration and equipment and machine operation. If there are no individuals who want to know how to become an electrician, there would be no modern society as we know it. Check Interest and Aptitude While you are still in high school, you should already find out if you have the ability to learn how to become an electrician. Showing interest in the field is a good first requirement. You also need to check however if you have the technical aptitude to pursue studies that will teach you how to become an electrician. You can easily check through a school aptitude test. You can also roughly determine your aptitude by checking how well you do in mathematics, science and electrical subjects. Aside from technical interest and aptitude, you should also be able to work well with your hands in coordination with your eyes. Physical fitness and ease of movement are also a requirement since you may have to get into unusual spaces when you perform wiring. Some employers may also require skill in technical English comprehension for manual interpretation. Take the Right Course There are numerous online and off line schools that will teach you how to become an electrician. The key is finding the right one. You should avoid online school scams and schools with sub standard curriculum. The only way to do that is to pick a school and program that is sponsored or affiliated with known reputable electrical associations and organizations. In reality though, it actually takes a lot to know how to become an electrician. You need to both work hard and spend a lot of time learning your field. The standard program of education can be finished in 4 years. During your study, you have to complete 2000 hours of practical training and 144 hours of theoretical study. These studies are more than just learning how to connect wires because you will also learn about electrical codes and systems. Be Well Rounded You can choose to learn how to become an electrician either for maintenance or construction. You could specialize but it is usually advisable to have skills and knowledge in both areas. Get a License It is already a given that experts are more respected if they have licenses to prove their skill. In any case, you would really need a license because most employers and clients really require their electricians to have one. You should take the state exam that will test your knowledge on theories and codes. Continue Studying Learning how to become an electrician does not end after you leave school and pass the license exams. New trends, methods and guidelines may emerge for your field. The only way you can compete with updated younger electricians is to keep on learning how to become an electrician. Some employers may automatically provide the opportunity for further training classes. If they do not, then you would have to actively pursue further training yourself.
