Various employment opportunities in water management

Before we talk about various employment opportunities available in water management, let us first take a look at the different areas where water management is being applied.
Water management is basically applied in the practice of planning, development distribution and optimum utilization of water resources by following certain defined regulations and policies.
The principles of water management are applied to the following areas:
1. Water treatment to provide drinking water, treatment of industrial water, sewage and wastewater
2. Water resources management
3. Flood protection
4. Irrigation
Water is available to us from rivers, reservoirs or from the underground. This water requires some amount of treatment to make it suitable for use. The amount of treatment would depend on how water would be used.
In case of treatment of water to provide drinking water, all impurities and polluting substances are removed from untreated water to make it safe for human use. There are certain standards which have been laid down for water for human consumption. Water after treatment should conform to those standards. The substances that are generally removed include bacteria, algae, viruses, fungi, sand and other solid substances, and polluting chemicals.
In case of sewage and wastewater treatment, the process removes polluting chemicals from wastewater or sewage. The treatment would produce water which could be released to nature or re-cycled for farther use. The process would also produce sludge. Output water produced after treatment should conform to certain standards, so that it does not damage the environment.
Water resources management involves water available from different sources and used for different purpose. Sources could be from surface water available from rivers, lakes and reservoirs or water which is available under ground. It is also involved in desalination process. This process converts saline water mainly available as sea water into potable water suitable for human use. Water resources management is also involved in proper utilization of water for agricultural, industrial and human consumption.
Generally, flood protection and irrigation goes together. It involves building of dams to save us from floods, reservoirs to store water and canals to distribute water to different users.
So, it is very clear that the scope of water management is quite vast and therefore, it has the capacity to provide employment to quite a large number people to handle all its aspects. Therefore, water management jobs would also encompass water treatment jobs also. Skills that will be required to handle these jobs would include Civil, Mechanical and Chemical Engineers. It would also involve environmental experts so that environment does not suffer any damage when any water management project is implemented. There are many other disciplines which would be involved for handling aspects of water management.
