Anyone who has cut without a jig and with a job will tell you that it is defiantly a good idea to always use a jig. A good woodworking jig is almost a priceless tool. It can take a frustrating project and make it simple. Such things as picture frame molding can be made much easier by using a jig. A jig will prevent bad cuts from ruining a project and giving you a headache. You so not have to buy a fancy or expensive jig. A simple jig will do just fine. If you do regular woodworking or extensive woodworking projects, though, a high quality jig is a good idea. Jigs will save you time and money, so buying the best quality one you can is the ideal choice.

There are different kinds of jigs you can buy. The dowel jig is a great tool for cutting dowel holes to just the right width and depth. They are perfect for someone who makes furniture. Another jig good for the furniture maker is a dovetail jig. This type of jig is good for giving pieces a dovetail structure, which adds strength and durability to a piece. A router jig is good for making fine detailing. It is the perfect tool for a woodworker who specializes in fine detailed pieces. It can also be used fro beveled edging. The Kreg jig is one of the jigs every woodworker wants in their tool collection. It is a set that comes with almost everything you could need. It included clamps t support the drill jigs which allow for drilling set depths and hole sizes for perfect fit.

If you are just starting out in woodworking and can not afford a jig just yet, you can get a good idea of how it works by alerting you own drill a bit. If you need a specific depth, measure up the drill bit and use some tape to mark the depth. You can then drill to the desired depth. It will not be as accurate as a jig, but will give you an understating of just how great it will be to have your jig when you can finally afford it and in the meantime it will help you afford devastating drilling mistakes. Of course, it is not an ideal long term plan because removing that tape is not going to be fun, but as mentioned, it is a simple solution until you can buy a jig.
