Our busy lives demand time-saving tricks whenever we can find them. But some things, like homemade waffles, are worth the extra time and effort. Waffles have been the main attractions on breakfast tables and buffet bars for many years. They are served for breakfast with butter and syrup, and for dessert with fresh fruit and ice cream. Some people eat waffles covered with beef gravy for dinner. There's really no end to the many ways you can enjoy this tasty treat. Waffles have been dietary staple of people around the world for a long time. Earlier generations created waffles by placing a barley batter onto a crude iron griddle, and baking the batter to create a toasted cake. From there, things quickly progressed. People began to experiment with ingredients and baking methods. At one time, baking ones' family crest as a design into the waffle was a popular trend. As technology improved, each generation has enjoyed easier methods of baking waffles, as special devices were created and recipes were improved. Making delicious waffles at home really is very easy. All you need is a good batter recipe and a proper waffle iron. You don't need a fancy appliance; just a basic design with two metal plates that are hinged at a centre point. These metal plates are heated and the waffle iron folds in half. With batter between, the hot metal plates provide the perfect place for the waffles to bake to perfection. Traditionally, waffle irons were heated in an open flame. With attached tongs, the batter-filled irons were held over a fire to bake the waffles. Today, of course, modern cooks use electric waffle irons that easier to use, clean and store. Waffle irons come in a variety of sizes, and the indentations on the surface of the baking plates can come in a variety of shapes. You can shop around to find waffles decorated in squares, triangles or circles. You can serve heart-shaped waffles on Valentine Day, or treat your kids to waffles baked with images of their favorite cartoon characters. Some waffle irons have removable plates that allow you to change the design of your waffles to suit the occasion. From carnivals to breakfast tables, Belgian waffles are the undisputed champions. Ever since they were introduced in 1965, waffle lovers have been devouring them. A true Belgian waffle must be baked with a special iron that gives it those deep indentations, perfect for holding cream, syrup, butter, chocolate chips, fruit and just about anything else you can think of to dress up this divine treat. Homemade waffles are easy to make and taste so much better than their frozen cousins. If you love the flavor and aroma of hot, fresh waffles, do yourself a favor and buy a waffle iron. You'll never go back to toaster waffles again!
