Woodworking On A Budget

The proper woodworking tools are essential to any woodworking project. The right tools will not magically make you an expert craftsman, but you can't be one without them. For most woodworkers, collecting the right tools is a lifelong pursuit. Great collections do not happen overnight. High quality tools are expensive, and must be aggregated over time. Woodworking machinery is especially dear, and you have to make sure you really need to own, and cannot just rent or borrow, before you make the purchase. That being said, woodworking is a great hobby, and you deserve to have the best equipment. But how do you go about building your collection? This simple buyer's guide will tell you how.

First, decide what kind of woodworking you want to do. Research what equipment (both tools and machinery) is essential, and put them in a list. Are there some pieces that you can do without for now? Prioritize your wish list. Perhaps you can buy a few items on your own and then register for the rest if you have a special occasion coming up. Your fiance might not appreciate your putting power tools in your wedding registry, but maybe you two can negotiate. Just buy the essentials at the beginning, and try to get by without the rest for a while. Usually your desired tools are not exactly necessary; they simply make your job easier. Do not be reluctant to struggle for a while and work harder toward your goal of owning more tools and machinery. Everyone has to do it. Once your friends and family see how much you want more equipment in your woodshop, they might be willing to give you a table saw for your next birthday.

When shopping for tools, do not skimp on the price. You will always pay dearly for this in the end with repair fees and replacement parts. You always want to buy the best tool that you can afford, because it is worth it in the end. Tools and machinery of better quality will last twice as long than cheaper models.

You can find your woodworking equipment at your local hardware or home improvement store. At stores you always have qualified and experienced salespeople that can advise you on the best deals. Most of these employees are craftspeople themselves, and have personal experience with the tools. Make sure to ask a staff member in your favorite department, and you are likely to find one of these experts. If you are lucky enough to live close to a specific tool dealer with an excellent reputation, then you can buy direct. However most people these days opt to buy tools online. You can shop around online in a way that you cannot in a store. You are less likely to buy on impulse when you can compare prices. You can also find great deals on auction sites like eBay. Just make sure you buy from a reputable dealer with excellent feedback. Also make sure that you do not end up paying a high price in shipping costs for heavy machinery.
